  1. ‘Green Touch’ to make Hard Water as soft as the morning Dew

    Post by : zerob

    What is Zero B Softener?
Does the Zero B Softener work for hard water?
Does hard water increase gas consumption?
Doe hard water lead to blockages?
What health effects does hard water have?

Hard water can have adverse affects in various ways. Not only does it take away the taste of fresh fruits and vegetables when they are washed & cooked, hard water also reduce the lifespan of expensive household appliances like geysers, washing machines, dishwashers etc.

Does hard water increase gas consumption?Does hard water lead to blockages?
Hard water increases the consumption of gas, increasing utility bills manifold. It leads too blockages in the piping system, thereby reducing water pressure because of corrosion and rust accumulation and increased bacteria in the drinking water. Life expectancy of cloths is reduced when washed with hard water. It also dulls surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens, leading to higher cleaning costs which require aggressive cleaning chemicals and increased labor. Hard water also has adverse effects on health and could cause skin damage and hair loss.

    Hard Water

“Hard” water has high levels of dissolved calcium and/ or magnesium minerals. These minerals may occur in ground water passing through limestone, or other rocks with a calcium mineral content. As water evaporates, these minerals harden themselves as mineral deposits, also known as scale. The level of hardness is related to the amount of dissolved mineral in the water. There are proven solutions soften hardwater. It can be corrected by the use of a water softener/conditioner. The water passes through a tank containing resin beads holding “soft” sodium ions. The “hard” calcium and magnesium ions are then exchanged for sodium ions, thus softening the water.

The water that enters the house is filtered through the zeolite minerals. A reaction occurs during the treatment process which replaces the magnesium and calcium ions to be replaced by sodium. The minerals containing zeolite require change on a periodic basis. This system includes a large tank where the bags of softener salts are regularly added. Chemical method is the most inexpensive way of treating hard water. Two chemicals used in the water treatment are Sal soda and Calgon.

Ion Exchange a global leader in providing safe water has one of the best solutions to treat hard water. The Zero B series of Water Softeners incorporate the proven technique of counter flow regeneration which has been pioneered by Ion Exchange. This technique is ideally suited to treat water with high hardness. The flow of water and the flow of brine (Salt Solution), which is used for regeneration, are opposite to each other during operation.

    Hard Water Damage Hair

Zero B New Generation Softeners Series are compact, manually & automatically operated units that are easily and quickly installed. Zero B Softenizer Unit consists of a tank containing Ion Exchange Resin Media, which removes hardness from water to acceptable level.

The hard water passes through this sodium-rich ION Exchange Resin. The media exchanges minerals that cause hardness like calcium (CA) and magnesium (Mg) for sodium. This results in the softness of water that comes out from the outlet. After continuous usage, the resins get saturated with minerals and have to be replaced using Zero B Palletized Salt.

The Zero B New Generation Softeners Series can be used for water treatment in housing societies, hotels, shopping malls, hospitals and corporate parks.

  2. Why do we need to remove hardness of water?

    Post by : Zerob

    Water Treatment for Iron Removal

Why to remove hardness inside water?
Can you use hard water for a kettle?
Is it necessary to remove hardness inside water?
How does scaling happen in appliances?
What are the effects of hardness in water?

Hard water in home can cause scaling and furring of heating systems used like kettles, geysers, other utensils that are used to heat water. Apart from heating appliances, these scaling can be seen to happen in washing machines, dishwashers and such other type of appliances. The extent of scaling usually depends on the level of hardness in the water, the temperature to which the water gets heated and also on the quantity of water used in the appliances.

This is how scaling happens in some of the commonly used appliances used at our home:

Using hard water in kettles produces calcium carbonate scale or fur. In metal kettles this sticks to the side and in plastic kettles, which have smoother sides, it appears as a film on top of the water.
    Showers, Sinks and toilets

Lime scaling or the depositing of salts of calcium and other metals contained in hard water happens when thin films form on smooth surfaces of baths, basins, WC pans, allowing dirt to accumulate there. If cleaning is not done regularly, these deposits can become tougher to remove.

    Heating systems

Generally, in water heating systems, water travels from a tank in the roof, to a boiler, where it is heated. In some other types of water heater, the unit is a small one that can fit in easily inside the bathroom. To avoid scaling inside these water heaters, avoid overheating of water. A maximum temperature of 60 degrees centigrade is recommended.

    Immersion heaters

Immersion heaters can be susceptible to too much scale building up on the heating element and stopping the water circulating properly. To prevent excessive heating of the water, we recommend you make sure the thermostat is working and correctly adjusted. Here again 60 degree centigrade is sufficient.

If you are regularly using an immersion heater it may be possible to prevent the build up of scale by using elements with special metal sheaths.

So, to prevent these scale build up in your utensils and appliances one way is to use a Water Softener, which can reduce the Hardness present in the supply water and thus prevent scaling or furring.

    Hardness of Water

    What causes hardness in water?
What are the primary minerals which cause hardness in water?
    Is hardness of water harmful?
What is the milligram size of minerals in water?
How much minerals in water is considered hard water?

The water we get for our daily needs comes from natural sources – both underground as well as from sources closer to surface like the rivers or lakes.
    Is hardness of water harmful?
This water needs to be treated to remove harmful and unpleasant materials like bacteria, viruses and dissolved impurities before being fit for human consumption. Even after treating, tap water may still contain some amount of minerals in it.

The primary minerals that causes hardness in water are calcium and magnesium.

When water contains 0-60 milligrams per liter (mg/L) of these minerals, it is considered to be “soft water.”
Concentration between 60-120 milligrams per liter (mg/L) is classified as “moderately hard.” while concentration of 121-180 mg/L is called “hard.”

Water which has 180 mg/L of mineral content is considered Very Hard.
The higher the concentration of minerals in water, the “harder” it is.

    Rainy Season

How to keep yourself safe during rainy season?
How to keep away from diseases during rainy season?
What are the ways to keep safe during rainy season?
What are some tips to keep safe from rainy water?
Is it advisable to eat food which is kept out for a long time?

Though rains bring in much needed relief from summer heat, they also give rise to water borne diseases like Influenza, Typhoid, Diarrhea, Jaundice, etc. Due to the rains, water gets accumulated in our surroundings leading to mosquitoe breeding and eventual rise of diseases like malaria and dengue. Eye flu and infections of the foot are also observed in this season. Apart from these, high blood pressure, muscular and joint aches, gas formation and gastric disturbances also occur quite frequently in this season. Incidence of viral attacks, cough and cold also goes up during this time of the year.

Here are some tips to help you keep these diseases and infections at bay so that you can enjoy the season to the fullest.

    1. During monsoon intestinal functions along with the digestive system become weak, thus making the body highly vulnerable to any kind of infection. Therefore always prefer eating light food and avoid too much of spicy and fried foods.

    2. As most of the infections during monsoon are water borne, so avoid water that is not properly boiled. Drinking water should be boiled and properly filtered and purified. It is best advice to drink warm water with the meals for easy digestion.

    3. Avoid consuming food that is kept exposed for a long time, as the food tends to get contaminated by germs due to this exposure and the contaminated food on entering our body can cause various ailments.

    4. Vegetables should be washed and preferably steamed before use and cooked well to kill any germ content in them

    5. People suffering from diabetes should take special care of their feet during monsoon season like not walking barefoot as the ground becomes a reservoir of all types of germs during the rainy season.

    6. Prevent mosquito breeding by not letting water accumulate in your surroundings. A few drops of Kerosene or phenyl in stagnant water can help in checking mosquito breeding.

7.Apart from naturally occurring diseases, electrical injuries due to leakage of current, water dripping on to live electrical wiring is also common during the rains. Hence it would be wise to have a thorough check-up of the wirings, switches, plugs and positioning of wires around the house.

What are some scientific facts about water?
Can you live without water more than a month?
What is the supply of water on earth?
How much amount of water is in the form of water vapor?
What is the body weight which comes from water?

    1. Water covers nearly 75 % of the earth’s surface.
but only 0.5% of total water on the earth’s surface can be utilized by us.

    2. You can live without food for more than a month, but cannot only live without water for more than a week.

    3. In some organisms, (like jellyfish!) up to 90 % of their body weight comes from water. In human body, nearly 60 % is water – brain is composed of 85 % water, blood is 79 % water and the lungs are nearly 80 % water.

    4. Total water supply of planet earth is 1335 million cubic km. It simply means that if we can construct a cubic box of length, breadth and height of 1 km each, we will require 1335000000 such boxes to store all the water.

    5. About 13000 cubic km of water, mostly in the form of water vapor, is in the atmosphere at any given time.

Ground Water Contamination by Septoc Tanks

How are septic tanks contaminating water?
    Does septic tank contaminate water?
What are the harmful effects of septic water tanks?
Where does the percolation happen in septic tanks?
How does the process of septic tanks work?

Bore well Water is getting increasingly contaminated due to high level of pollutants being found in ground water. Ground water sources gets polluted due to overflowing sewage, septic tanks, leaking sewer lines and untreated waste water. Sewage which is a complex mixture contains many types of contaminants in the form of bacteria, nitrates, heavy metals, toxic materials and salts.

Sewage overflow leads to ingestion of microorganisms like E coli, Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Hepatitis A, etc

Underground septic tanks happen to contaminate water reservoirs. Large portions of the population here uses a septic tanks.

Contamination of water from septic tanks occurs under various conditions:

Treatment of waste in septic tanks occurs by bacterial decomposition.

Poor placement of septic leach fields can result in partially treated waste water percolating into a drinking water source. Leach fields consists of an area where waste water after treatment percolates through soil as part of the treatment process.

Badly constructed percolation systems may allow water to escape without proper treatment.

The septic system may fail due to clogging resulting in overflowing to land or surface water.

Due to the density of population in our country, a high density placement of tanks, can result in localities containing very high concentrations of waste water. This water may run-off into surface water or flow directly into the water table thus contaminating the Ground water sources.

Hence it is essential to purify the bore well water properly – freeing it from different types of contaminants.

    Storage Tank Causing Water Contamination

    Does storage tank contaminate water?
    Is storage tank harmful?
Is water harmful inside storage tank?
Do people have overhead tanks in houses?
    How to clean storage tanks?

In any municipal water distribution system, the water is first chlorinated and pumped into large reservoirs. From these reservoirs it is pumped into overhead tanks of various localities.

These overhead tanks supply water to the consumers

Consumers usually have overhead tanks in their houses or societies to store water. As a result, the water happens to pass through three to four levels of storage before it reaches the tap of the consumer.

If we do not take precautions, water can get contaminated at each stage of storage.

The storage tanks thus needs to be cleaned frequently with bleaching powder to check accumulation of sediment and slime.

No sunlight should be permitted to enter the tanks as in the presence of sediment and sunlight, algae grows vigorously. This promotes the growth of harmful bacteria. To block sunlight from entering the overhead tanks, black plastic sheets can be used to cover the lids of the over head tanks to prevent water from entering
