To understand how RO Purifiers score over UF Purifiers we need to delve slightly into the purification process of both these purifiers.
Lets start with the RO Purifiers first.
In RO Purifiers purification happens following a process of Reverse Osmosis. To understand the process of Reverse Osmosis, let us take a closer look at the Osmosis process. Osmosis is a process in which water molecules flow across a semi permeable membrane – from a region of lower solute strength to a region of higher solute strength. The solute strength in this case refers to the TDS (Total Dissolved & Suspended Impurities) level of water. The water thus in an Osmosis process moves from across the membrane from a region of lower TDS level to the region of higher TDS level
In the RO process the Opposite happens. Hence the name Reverse Osmosis. In this process water is forced to move from a region of higher solute concentration to the region of lower solute concentration. This is achieved by pumping water at a higher pressure inside the RO Chamber causing water molecules to be flow through the membrane to the other side leaving behind dissolved solids and other impurities. The impurities that are left behind are drained out through another outlet. The water that passes through the semi permeable membrane in the RO Purifier has a much lesser concentration of TDS than the original inlet water.
So, when the water has high TDS and is Hard, RO Purification is the most effective
Since the water needs to be pumped at a high pressure to help it pass across the membrane, RO Purifiers will need electricity to perform this task. Hence the RO Purifiers cannot operate without electricity
In an UF or Ultra filtration Purifier, a semi permeable membrane like in case of RO Purifier is used but the holes in the UF Purifier are much larger compared to the holes in the RO purifier and as a result water passes through the UF Filter using the force gravity and without any additional applied pressure. Thus UF Filters work without electricity and should be considered for use where the TDS level of water is low and the water is not Hard

For a Reverse Osmosis Water Purifier to function optimally, it needs to be periodically maintained.
The frequency of maintenance depends on the extent of use of the system. Though whether or not a purifier is used heavily or sparsely, one needs to get it serviced at least once in a year’s period to ensure the filtration is happening right and that the scaling of the membrane is not much.

Regular Filter Changes
This will depend upon the upon how many stages of purification is being used in your RO Purifier.

The carbon filter that removes chlorine and other harmful chemical contaminants affect the water’s taste and odor and should be changed once a year.
RO membranes do not need replacement very often. Under normal circumstanes then can be safely changed once in 3 years but in case the overall maintenane of the system is not done and the RO Membrance gets affected due to this then this may need a change as well.
The Post filter in the final stage of Purification in an RO Purifier and it helps in removing any residual odor and foul taste in water to ensure you get completely pure and fresh drinking water.

Some people are of the opinion that Water from an RO Water Purifier is Acidic and hence unsafe and not good for health. This is not correct. Water from an RO water purifier is the best water to drink.
The fact is, though carbonic acid gets generated to some extent in the initial stages of purification, the special cartridges, containing alkali chemicals. that are used in the later stages of purification in an RO Purifier helps in removing all traces acid from water.
